Break Down of Health Insurance
Coming from someone who has dealt with this personally, health insurance can be extremely confusing. I can never remember, “Do I have an EPO, HMO, PPO, or a POS?” Finally when I do remember, I have no idea what they even mean. To help all of you that may have this same problem, here is a quick list that should help understand the difference between them.
HMO: large network care from in network providers is covered and you pay for care from out of network providers. You have to select a primary care physician from network and see that doctor for all of your medical needs.
PPO: large network care from in network providers is covered. You pay for care from out of network providers and then submit a claim from your insurance company. Once claim is submitted they may or may not reimburse you for the cost. You can choose a primary care physician that is either in or out of the network. However, it will cost more if you choose one out of network.
POS: large network care from in network providers is covered. You pay for care from out of network providers. You are not required to choose a primary care physician but will be encourages to select one from network. If you choose one out of network you will have a higher co-pay.
EPO: small network care from in network providers is covered, and is at a low cost. You pay for care from out of network providers. You can either choose a doctor in network or out of network. If you choose in network, you will have a low co-pay compared to if you choose one out of network, you will be paying for everything yourself.
