Save, Save, Save!

Today is the day to discuss something different. More and more people are doing what they can to save the planet. Take a look at the car companies for example, multiple companies have and are creating cars that are better for our planet. But there are other ways that we can all help save the planet, save energy, as well as lower home costs.

            1. Install CFL Bulbs. CFLs, also known as Compact Flourescent Lamps) save energy and money. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, CFLs can save up to 75% energy compared to regular light bulbs.

            2. Turn off all electronic devises that are not in use and also unplug them. It seems so simple but easy task will save you more than you think.

            3. Air-dry you dishes. The heat generated in a dishwasher cycle is more than enough to dry your dishes.

            4. If you have a ceiling fan, window fan, or plain table-top fan this will save a lot of energy. All fans create air movement in a room therefore helping raise the thermostat temperature.

            5. Ever notice a cold breeze sneaking in through your windows or door? Weather stripping your doors and windows is an inexpensive alternative to replacing windows and can help save you from overusing your heaters.

            6. Wash your clothes in cold water. Despite what people may say, cold water does clean clothes and can cut a load of laundry’s energy use in half.

            7. Repair or replace leaky faucets. A leaky faucet can waste about 30,000 gallons of water a year.

            8. Turn your water heater down. If you are like me and love to take a hot shower after a walk in the cold winter air, just turn in down during the hot summer months. Though you are not doing it year around, you are doing it have the year and the will make a difference.

            9. If you find yourself cranking the heat during the summer, pull the shades down. This will help keep the room cooler by keeping out the hot sun light.

            10. Install low-flow showerheads, taps, faucets, and toilets.

Things have changed and people are doing all they can to save money as well as save the planet. These tips will help you do both and at John E. Peakes Insurance Agency we want to do our best to help you save money on insurance and in your everyday life. So good luck and even if you only change one thing, you have made a difference and also saved!
