When Should You Update Your Insurance?

Many drivers don’t realize that it is extremely important to update car insurance policies on a regular basis. The following is a list of occurrences that would need a customer to contact their agent to update their insurance.

            1. Buying or selling a car: Anytime you buy a new car or sell your car that is listed on your auto insurance policy, it is important to contact your insurance agent about updating your policy. If you want your new vehicle to be covered it has to be listed on your policy and this is why it is very important to call your agent before you drive your new car off the lot. Also, once you sell your car you should contact your auto insurance company about removing that vehicle from your policy to avoid paying any unnecessary coverage.

            2. New driver: Every licensed driver in your home needs to be added to your auto insurance policy to protect you in case they are involved in an accident while driving your car.

            3. Marriage or Divorce: If you recently have gotten married or divorced, you should contact your insurance agent about updating your policy. When you get married you and your spouse are listed on the same policy, which usually saves you money. If you get divorced, you should ask your agent to remove your ex-spouse and their vehicle from your policy so that you are not paying for coverage you don’t need.

            4. Paying off your car: Most of the time when you finance a vehicle you are required to carry a specific minimum coverage amount on the vehicle. After you pay off your car, contact your agent to find out if the coverage amount you are paying for is still accurate for your insurance needs. You may be able to change your coverage to allow you to save money.

            5. If you move: If you change your address you should contact your agent immediately in order to update your garaging and new mailing address.
